2020 Peoria General Council Meeting

The 2020 Peoria General Council Meeting was held at the Peoria Showplace at Buffalo Run Casino on March 7, 2020. The Annual General Council Meeting was met with great success. Attendance was estimated at 125 people, with 86 voting members present. Chief Harper provided updates on the Peoria Tribal programs and enterprises, as well as having staff provide updates. In addition, each department within the Peoria Tribe was present to provide information and welcome attendees. A special guest from Illinois State Museum was in attendance and displayed numerous artifacts that are part of the Peoria Archeological collection at Illinois State Museum. The day was concluded with a ground breaking at the former Miami Country Club, where Chief Harper unveiled the plans for the future Peoria Campus with will include Woodland Academy Learning Center and Peoria Longhouse Community Center.

Thank you to Chief Craig Harper, his staff, and the Peoria citizens for all the work you do to maintain our strength and sovereignty as a Tribal Nation! We are #PeoriaProud !

New Peoria Campus Groundbreaking

We are overwhelmed with excitement for the Peoria Longhouse Community Center and the Woodland Academy Learning Center following our groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, March 7th. Joined by architect, Jason Holuby with New Fire Native Design Group, our Council and citizens gathered to celebrate this movement forward. The Longhouse Community Center will serve as a place to gather and celebrate our culture and social relations while the Woodland Academy Learning Center will support children up to 5 years of age, as well as host an after-school program for citizens of Miami, Oklahoma. Plans are still in the making to expand this campus even further to include a wellness center, and a cultural center in the future. The campus will be located on Elm Street, on the land that was previously the Miami Country Club. This project is huge and we are thrilled to see the value and strength it will bring to our citizens and our community. We would like to thank our staff, Chief Harper, and New Fire Native Design Group for their careful planning and dedication to this project over the last two years. Welcome, 2020! #PeoriaProud

Intertribal Agriculture Council Internship Opportunities

2020 Internship Opportunities

The IAC is recruiting innovative, collaborative, and focused high school and early college-aged youth that are passionate about promoting the regeneration of natural resources within their communities. IAC will be offering up to 10 Tribal Land Steward Intern positions to American Indian youth across the country. It is the goal of IAC to keep these interns rooted in their home communities for a full summer of work embracing their interests in natural
resources through a dynamic partnership with the NRCS.

Selected interns will engage in an 8-10 week paid internship between May and September 2020. This is a paid internship position and will be compensated at an hourly rate of $12.50, not to exceed more than 40 hours per week. Each intern will experience a tailored learning plan to enhance their knowledge of natural resource management in Indian Country, exploring their strengths and improving their weaknesses. Additional support for traveling to and from the work site may be available.

IAC has designed these internships to not only educate youth on NRCS employment opportunities but to also support their ability to collaborate with local stakeholders involved in managing Indian Country’s natural resources. Throughout the summer, these interns will gain an in-depth perspective and innovative understanding of how to effectively inspire conservation on the landscape. Internships will be designed to fit within the youth’s
community and embrace their passions through a detailed, individualized learning opportunity.
